History of a Vintage Conference:

History of a Vintage Conference:

The Vintage Diving Days began on the Costa Brava on the initiative of Mr. Enrique Dauner and Mr. Ramón Roquetas, following the example of pioneering countries in the defense of the Historical Heritage of Diving.

The “I Vintage Diving Day” was held in March 2009 in Tossa de Mar. The City Council of Tossa de Mar, Cressi, the Navy Diving Centre (CBA) based in Cartagena, collaborated and it was a complete success. The “II Vintage Diving Day” took place in May 2011 again in Tossa de Mar.

The “III Jornadas de Buceo Vintage” took place on 12-13 May 2012 in Tossa de Mar, also organized by Enrique Dauner and Ramón Roqueta, at the same time as the “I International Underwater Cameras Meeting: UW Rollei” organised by Andrés Clarós. Both meetings were a great success with attendees from Spain, France, Germany, Denmark, England, Venezuela, United States… the result was captured in a report of the TV series “Thalassa”… It was the first time that conferences on diving equipment and underwater cameras were added to the vintage diving format. The Historical Diving Societies of Spain, France, Germany and the United States participated with their attendance.

The “IV Jornada de Buceo Histórico” was held in May 2013 also in Tossa de Mar, directed by Ramón Roqueta and Enrique Dauner.

The “II International Underwater Cameras Meeting: UW Rollei” took place at the Maritime Museum of Barcelona (MMB) in October 2014 during the Exhibition held by the Barcelona Underwater Camera Museum (BUCAM) and the MMB from 24 October 2014 to 12 April 2015.

In October 2021, after a long period of inactivity in Buceo Vintage, HDS-ES organized in Tossa de Mar the “V Jornada de Buceo Vintage”.

On this post-pandemic year we recover the project “III International Underwater Cameras Meeting: UW Rollei” organized by BUCAM and the “VI Jornada de Buceo Vintage” organized by HDS-ES. This new edition will take place in Lloret de Mar (Girona) on 16-17-18 September 2022. The change of location to Lloret de Mar is due to the excellent reception by the Mayor’s Office of Lloret as well as the fact that it was precisely in its waters, in the Montgoda, where Dr Ernest Adler built his watertight boxes for photography and film which allowed him to shoot the first amateur film images on the Costa Brava (ca 1945) and which won the prize at the IX Amateur Film Festival of Barcelona in March 1947. That’s why this year we created the “Dr. Ernest Adler Vintage Underwater Photography Award”.

BUCAM is the acronym of the Barcelona Underwater Camera Museum, the world’s largest collection of underwater cameras (https://bucam.barcelona). It is a private entity created by Andrés Clarós in 2007 with the aim of disseminating the history and knowledge of underwater imaging systems. The opening of a physical museum is the ultimate goal of BUCAM.

The Spanish Historical Diving Association or HDS-ES (https://www.hdses.com/) was created in 2006 by a group of diving enthusiasts of the first generations, later joined by great collectors of underwater material or simply lovers of diving and its history. We must highlight the perseverance of Juan Torras who has been the “alma mater” of this association from the beginning. HDS-ES has always been present in almost all the events focused on diving and its techniques, has published diving books already out of print, has participated in exhibitions and diving shows… and now co-organizes this new edition of the Vintage Diving Day 2022.
